Player Spotlight: DaQuan Perry
Player Spotlight: DaQuan Perry
Major League Rugby teams are finding out that signing American college talent is smart not only financially but also in terms of growing fan interest, and with that in mind we humbly submit this Player Spotlight.
Known as a smaller-than-average flanker in D1A, DaQuan Perry nonetheless finds himself repeatedly in the right place at the right time. He scores tries (six in six conference games last season for Kutztown), he makes tackles, and he works hard every day.
We got to know Perry a little bit better last weekend as he was helping coach one of the teams at the Berks County HS 7s intrasquad tourney. Perry showed himself to be a student of the game, coaching with enthusiasm and patience.
Too often we make the mistake of thinking that a player with athletic gifts doesn't have to learn about the game. That can be true—sometimes a player who is a natural doesn't communicate how he succeeds when he talks to other players. But that's not always true, and when you listen to Perry talk about rugby as you can in the embedded video above, you realize that, as the saying goes, he's more than just a pretty face. He's shown he can succeed at higher levels, showcasing his skills with the Schuylkill River men's club, and he's the kind of player pro teams should be signing.
