Marvin Ridge, Hough, Myers Park All Log Wins in North Carolina
Marvin Ridge, Hough, and Myers Park all recorded wins over the weekend in North Carolina’s boys school league.
With Marvin Ridge and Hough winning, that sets up a midweek game between those two in a repeat of the 2022-23 final, which Marvin Ridge won.
This fall’s 7s champs Hough won big over Charlotte Catholic lead by an outstanding effort from Daveon Neibauer, who is back from injury.
With flanker Curtis Lambert and hooker Tyler Valverde leading the way defensively (tackling and regaining possession in the rucks) and No. 8 Kai Campbell dominant on contact, Hough rolled.
The attack worked nicely through the halfback combination of Porter Kuebler and Zach Colson, with fullback Max Colson doing well to get Hough out of pressure. Up front prop Jacob Eroh was a handful. It was a good start for Hough but there will be sterner tests to come.
For Myers Park, their big forward pack saw them past Sun Valley. Sun Valley is a new program this year as the NCYRU school league has expanded. With some solid athletes bolstered by some players who have HS-club experience who attend the school, Sun Valley has hit the ground running.
Myers Park had to work for it to win 25-22.
Marvin Ridge, for their part, got past a tough Clayton side 43-14 to improve to 2-0.
Nate Rawls scored two tries and was named player of the game.
“We started strongly with good territory, possession, and pressure on Clayton so we're able to build a strong lead by halftime,” said Rawls. “It was great as 32 players travelled and 32 players got game time!"
New player Tanteh Yongho added "it was awesome to play the second half and make some strong carries and tackles - this is only my second ever game of rugby but I love it.”
This is Marvin Ridge's fourth year and the program has grown from 28 to 130 players, including the launch of a Tier 2 (developmental) High School team this season.
(Ardrey Kell, Hough, and South Meck also have teams in the Tier 2 competition along with some newer or smaller teams.)
Marvin Ridge also fielded five teams in the Charlotte Metro middle school championship.
Next up Marvin Ridge takes on Hough on Wednesday, December 13 and a day later Myers Park will face South Meck
