Just Happy to be Playing: 4 Teams at Furman Invitational
The Furman Invitational wrapped up with six shortened games among four teams in the Carolinas.
Furman (of course), new varsity program Belmont Abbey, DIAA program South Carolina, and Citadel (which, like Furman, has a new coach) met up.
Furman Head Coach Michael Miller called the day "just a big win for rugby in general. After an 18-month layoff it was just great to have live rugby again."
With all of the teams testing out combinations and trying to get all players some playing time, it wasn't surprising that no team had a perfect 3-0 record.
South Carolina went 2-0-1, beating The Citadel and Furman, but tying Belmont Abbey (all games were 20 minutes long). Furman won their other two games while Belmont Abbey ended up 1-1-1. Citadel went 0-3.
Every team had their moments and really only one game could come close to being described as one-sided. Fitness was an issue for all of the teams.
For Furman, the 2-1 day was a good one, testing many new players. South Carolina traveled with over 50 players and were bigger than the opposition. Citadel was physical, but young, while Belmont Abbey had some experienced players but was just putting things together.
Scores:
Furman 12-0 Belmont Abbey
Furman 0-7 South Carolina
South Carolina 5-5 Belmont Abbey
Belmont Abbey 12-7 Citadel
Furman 12-5 Citadel
South Carolina 19-5 Citadel
