Injuries, Family Issues Decimate GVSU; Lakers Bow Out Of Playoffs
Grand Valley State men's team has informed USA Rugby that it cannot play in the USA Rugby Men's DII College playoffs this coming weekend.
GVSU is not able to field a full team. Injuries to five starters, including captain and No. 8 Cam McLoughlin (pictured), who has a concussion, cut the roster. Then three players have had to pull out of school for personal reasons (including a death in the family and a major illness in the family). With a small roster anyway, and with at least three other players potentially unable to suit up, GVSU is now down to probably less than 15 players.
"I told the guys that's why we needed 32 on our roster, not 22," said Head Coach John Mullett. "As it is if we could field a team we'd have to ask for uncontested scrums, and in a playoff game? That's not right."
After a team meeting Tuesday night, Mullett made the call and informed USA Rugby. There's a strong likelihood that the bracket may be changed as a result. It's possible a replacement team will be found to step in.
UMass-Lowell was slated to play Grand Valley State on Saturday, but currently does not have an opponent.
