Indiana Wins Big Ten
Indiana University defeated Ohio State 34-14 to win the Big Ten Universities Conference Saturday in Rockford, Ill.
The teams battled in a tight contest where Ohio State tried to assert their dominance in the forwards, and Indiana tried burn the Buckeyes on the outside. And this is how the two teams stayed deadlocked, 14-14 at halftime.
Then came the key play, perhaps the try of the game and certainly a turning point. Backed up against their own goal line, Indiana won a lineout and mauled the ball out of trouble. Then they spun it wide ti Jake Hidalgo on the left wing, and he raced through and past the OSU cover defense to score the go-ahead try. Teddy Terezis kicked the conversion, and added a penalty soon thereafter for a ten-point advantage.
Some more nifty backline work put Alex Dorrier through and then captain and center Bryce Campbell powered over to make it 34-14.
Ohio State was unable to find the space to score quickly, and grinding it out proved to be too much, as the IU defense held on for the rest.
Indiana also won the B-side championship, while Wisconsin overwhelmed Michigan to take 3rd.
throughout the season Indiana has been almost untouchable, with only Wisconsin (20-13) getting really close. Indiana went 7-0 in Big Ten Universities play, averaging over 60 points per game and allowing exactly 10 per game.
Now IU looks ahead to an ACRC Bowl Series clash with Kutztown. In the spring, they will look ahead to the DIA playoffs.
