Idaho Girls 7s Back On The Field For Round 2
Idaho Girls 7s Back On The Field For Round 2
After a week off from competition because of smokey air thanks to regional wildfires, the Rugby Idaho girls HS 7s is back in action this week.
Monday, today, the JV girls return to the pitch with Rocky Mountain Purple and Mountain View HS both coming in with 2-0 records.
Those two teams meet up at 7:25PM local time in a game that will go a long way to deciding bragging rights. Mountain View will also face Rocky Mountain Black (1-1 after the first tournament), so it won't be an easy evening for the Meridian, Idaho team. But at least they get to play at their home field at Mountain View HS.
"We have some really important games to look forward to this week," said Mountain View Head Coach Rich Hersey. "I have all the confidence that both teams will finish strong and find themselves in the Championship game this year."
Monday, September 21 JV Games and Times:
7:00PM Rocky Mountain Black (1-1) vs Meridian (0-2)
7:25PM Rocky Mountain Purple (2-0) vs Mountain View (2-0)
7:50PM Meridian HS (0-2) vs Eagle HS (0-2)
8:15PM Mountain View HS (2-0) vs Rocky Mountain Black (1-1)
8:40PM Eagle HS (0-2) vs Rocky Mountain Purple (2-0)
Varsity Plays Tuesday
On Tuesday the Varsity teams face off, also at Mountain View HS. Once again there are two teams at 2-0, with Rocky Mountain HS and Mountain View leading the way.
Player Spotlight: Kennedy Pabst Rocky Mountain HS
"I'm looking for our seniors to carry the team," said Mountain View's Hersey. "Mountain View is returning all but one starting player from last year. After finishing 2nd in the Championship, the girls came back ready to work harder than ever and win the title. In addition to our returning players, we've picked up some additional talent that will be able to contribute right away."
That recruiting effort is in part thanks to the support they get from the high school and Athletic Director Luke Wolf.
Three Mountain View players have extensive experience with TOA Rugby, the Rugby Idaho select side. Jada Medellin is the captain and a vocal leader on the team.
"She is solid with every aspect of her game, but her running in traffic is really fun to watch. I don't think anyone looks forward to tackling her," said Hersey.
Justice Rupp is an effective ball hawk and forces the turnovers. With the ball she brings an imposing stiff-arm and that puts defenders on the ground.
Deborah Davis is, said Hersey, "ridiculously fast and will outrun most of the league. She is also ferocious on defense. There have been many games where we assign Deb to focus on the opponent's best player. She never lets us down."
As with the JV teams, on Tuesday the two 2-0 teams will meet up.
