USA Rugby Moving College 7s Championship to the Spring
USA Rugby will be moving their college 7s championships to the spring. USA Rugby collegiate chief Rich Cortez confirmed with Goff Rugby Report that the USA Rugby event, which has been held in the fall the last three years, will finally move to the spring, likely before the CRC invitational run by United World Sports. For years, now, these two tournaments have been at odds, not so much because of who runs them (although that's part of it), but because of when they were held. The CRC came first, holding its first tournament in June of 2010. USA Rugby's Board pushed for competing tournament and that came to fruition in 2011. But that jut made it difficult for some teams to compete. Eventually the process saw teams play qualification tournaments through the fall moving toward the fall national championship, with many of those colleges balancing 15s at the same time. Then in the winter/spring, teams would focus on 15s, only to switch back to 7s for the CRC. The CRC won't move, as its timing is controlled by NBC, which wants to hold it on the first weekend of June. With many colleges saying they'd like a different scenario, USA Rugby has chosen to move to the spring, also. This could, potentially, provide a marriage of sorts between the two controlling organizations. The CRC is an invitational, while USA Rugby's event is, in theory, one you qualify for (although it was expanded with invitations as well). USA Rugby will likely be in a stronger position to tout their event as a "true national championship" because teams have to qualify to play. Meanwhile, all the indications are that the CRC will move to San Jose for 2015, and be played in the new San Jose Earthquakes stadium, set to open in early 2015. The CRC has been held five times, with the winners being: 2010: Utah 2011: Dartmouth 2012: Dartmouth 2013: Cal 2014: Cal The USA Rugby College 7s Championships have been held three times, with the Men's DI winners being: 2011: Life University 2012: Arkansas State 2013: Arkansas State Norwich has won all three women's events. No team has won both the Men's USA Rugby event and the CRC, although Life, which won USA Rugby in 2011 and finished second at the 2013 CRC has come closest.
