Sooners Clinch Red River
The University of Oklahoma clinched the Red River Conference Saturday with a convincing 63-13 victory over TCU.
TCU actually led early through a penalty kick, but two tries from lock Somtochukwu Iromuanya and tries from fullback Mike Anderson, prop Cale Stumpff, flyhalf Trevon Barnes, and prop Justin Fa'aola paced the Sooners to a 36-8 halftime lead.
After a slow period in the second half, Oklahoma stretched their lead with tries from wing Manny Soto, flanker Lucas Bersin, back Isaac Koh, and Bersin once more.
"This is TCU's 1st year in D1A and Coach Flowers is doing a heck of a job with those young men," said Oklahoma Head Coach Jason Horowitz. "They were tenacious, dangerous on attack at times and have very solid potential. We wish them best of luck the rest of their season and look forward to growing the Red River Conference with them."
Oklahoma fielded several newer players in their squad, testing the depth of a program that was struggling for numbers a year ago.
"I was not initially overwhelmed with the performance." said Horowitz. "I expected that our JV team would have executed our plan and structures better. The staff handed them the opportunity to finish what was an undefeated season. They did that, and scored some solid trys. So looking back on the game, I am very happy with the result... even though we could have been sharper. That will come with time."
