The American Raptors made their first foray into Super Rugby Americas with a 45-10 loss to Selknam.
The Raptors, featuring several players with USA aspirations, a few experienced South Americans, and a group of crossover athletes, are still finding their way in what is a very high level of competition.
The American Raptors are set to face off with Selknam in the Super Rugby Americas opening weekend Saturday in Chile.
Selknam is very close to the Chilean national rugby team, and so this will be a massive challenge for the Glendale, Colo.-based team made up of crossover athletes mixed with some former college standouts and a few South Americans.
Here's the lineup:
The American Raptors got a bit of a rude awakening in their warmup match this past weekend in Seattle.
Luke Gross enjoyed a rugby career as an American that is almost unprecedented in its length at the highest levels.
A basketball player at Indiana State and also at Marshall, Gross picked up the sport of rugby late, but his career blossomed with the Cincinnati Wolfhounds and with his 6-9 frame and love of contact, he soon earned notice from the USA setup.
The American Raptors are set to start Super Rugby Americas action in a little more than two weeks, playing four games on the road to start the competition.
They kick-start it all with a game at the Seattle Seawolves in Tukwila, Wash. this coming weekend.
