Led by player-of-the-game performances by inside back Kristin Tanner of Armstrong and Hopkins flanker Andrea Sanabria, the Minnesota girls all-star team defeated Wisconsin to win the Midwest Rugby Challenge Sunday in Elkart, Ind.

The victory capped off a best-ever all-star effort by Minnesota, which has been too often the bridesmaid team in recent years.

The Great Northwest Challenge welcomes ten girls select sides in two divisions to Delta Park in Portland, Ore. Saturday and Sunday.

The Northern California girls all-star team laid down a market in winning the Rocky Mountain Challenge, beating a tough Utah team 24-12 in the final.

In a tournament disrupted somewhat by lightning, Northern California brought the thunder, with a powerful forward performance that helped to unleash a potent back line.

Sunday was a busy day for the Rocky Mountain Challenge Regional All-Star tournament as the teams had to make up games halted by lightning on Saturday.

As a result, action began at 8am, and moved on through the weekend. The Utah Lions won the tournament, beating Heart of America 17-8 in the final. Utah also won the Boys JV tournament, beating Colorado 33-10 in the final.

The Minnesota girsl team is 2-0 at the Midwest Rugby Challenge, and in getting there, upended longtime nemesis Ohio 19-17.

That means that the Tundra will take on Wisconsin, also 2-0, in the championship game Sunday in Elkhart, Ind.
