MARIETTA, Ga. - As an anchor university for rugby in the SouthEast, it was only a matter of time before Life U put itself in the mix as a big stop on the Summer U19 7s calendar. The Stars & Stripes week ended for 44 highly-regarded high school boys rugby players Saturday with the Stars & Stripes game in Greeley, Colo.
The Stars fell behind early and then came back in a high-scoring game to win 42-38. But more than that, the game was the culmination of a week of work with their respective coaching staffs.
Quietly, for the last five plus year, middle school rugby has been blooming in pockets throughout the South. Around Atlanta, Charlotte, the Raleigh/ Durham area, Richmond and other Virginia cities, and across Tennessee there are middle school rugby football clubs that all have multiple seasons under their belts. The Rugby Washington Boys Loggers rep-side has announced 22 players selected for a U14/U15 Development Squad to play in a select side tournament in Kelowna, BC August 7-9.
Teams from British Columbia and Alberta will also be there.
