College Women
It’s a banner year for South Carolina. The women not only won the DII Carolinas conference after a 17-14 victory over the College of Charleston, but they are heading to the DII national championship to make some program history. It’s been a just payoff for the student leadership, as well as new coach Katie Wurst.
West Chester successfully defended its Mason Dixon conference title, defeating North Carolina 58-5 in yesterday’s final. The Golden Rams were eager for some competition that would accelerate its build-up toward nationals, and by the second half of the title bout, West Chester was playing the clinical game it will need going forward.
The West Coast conference was essentially building toward a rematch of Humboldt vs. UN Reno. The duo met early in February, and that match turned out to be the only competitive match of the teams’ regular season. Humboldt won that game by two points, and that slim margin paid dividends during last weekend’s conference playoffs.
Life and Central Florida were expected to compete for the South Independent DI title yesterday, and while the pair did make it to the title match, the weekend was anything but predictable.
Stanford went 6-0 during the regular season, but it wasn’t the unopposed run to the playoffs as it’s been in other years. This weekend, during the Pacific Mountain Rugby Conference post-season, the DI field was able to judge the relative strength of the perennial national finalist.
