It’s been a weird season for Grand Canyon University, but things may be looking up as the Lopes look ahead to next year.
Head Coach Ryan Kelly had to find games where he could as GCU wasn’t in a conference, and unfortunately that meant that in the middle of the spring season, teams weren’t available, and some that were available backed out.
USA Rugby has named the teams for the Men’s DI and DII College 7s Championships to be held May 23 and 24 at the University of Denver.
North Texas won the round robin SWC 7s tournament Saturday, beating Texas A&M in what amounted to the championship game, and earning a spot in the USA Rugby Men’s Collegiate 7s Championships.
Led by MVP performances from Jon Hiller, Michael Bliss, and Hame Havili, UNT defeated Texas A&M 31-28 to secure the tournament.
After having to work their way through close games, Life University was finally able to shake off an opponent, winning their DIA semifinal over Lindenwood 43-14.
“I’m very happy with the performance,” said Head Coach Tui Osborne. “It was a physical game. It was good to see them play hard.”
BYU somehow held on to win the Varsity Cup Final 30-27 Saturday in a wild game at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
The Cougars never trailed, but were within a whisker of seeing it all fritter away as Cal came back from a distressing first half to put themselves in a position to win it.
