GRR: HS Girls
It was a wild and historic season for the Saint Joseph Academy girls rugby team out of Ohio, as St. Joe's often considered a strong program, but wasn't a team that you found near the top of the Girls National Championships.
The West End Ruckettes capped off an excellent weekend of 7s rugby with a win over the New Jersey Blaze to take the Girls HSRC 7s tournament during the CRC weekend in Chester, Pa.
West End joined the Blaze and Doylestown as the three 3-0 teams coming out of pool play; the Ruckettes beat Divine Savior Holy Angels, Downingtown, and Unionville in a tough pool.
New Jersey Blaze, Doylestown, and the Westend Ruckettes led the charge in Saturday's girls HSRC tournament in Philadelphia, Pa.
All three teams swept their pool games to take one of the top three seeds in the quarterfinals.
"It kind of went as expected," said Blaze Coach Tom Feury. "I think we played well, but there are some really good teams here."
The New Jersey Blaze may have won the last two HS Girls 7s at the HSRC in Chester, Pa., but you've got to wonder if this year will be the year for the three-peat.
Four girls select teams participate in a mini-regional all-star tournament this past weekend in Southern California, giving SoCal all-star coaches a good, long look at the talent available for the SoCal team.
A Northern team played a Southern team in both Varsity and Junior Varsity.
