GRR: Western Washington
The Boise State Broncos launched themselves squarely into the NCRC playoff conversation with two victories in the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference this weekend.
In a physical clash on Saturday, Boise State held off Gonzaga University 27-14. And then turning around for the Sunday game, Boise State held off a determined Eastern Washington squad 41-36.
In what was a bit of a shock result, Gonzaga University edged Western Washington 22-20 Sunday in Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference action.
WWU Coach Paul Horne said his Vikings were plagued by penalties and turnovers, as well as mistakes that hurt scoring opportunities.
It might have just been a friendly match, but last week's 46-0 loss to Oregon State gave Western Washington's women's team some much-needed insights into the holes in their gameplay, and those are lessons they want to take into this weekend's clash with Western Oregon.
The Western Washington Vikings opened up their Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference with a 49-7 defeat of Oregon Saturday.
Played at WWU’s Harrington Field, the game dropped Oregon to 0-2 and raised WWU to 1-0. Western played well despite the heartbreaking loss of Louie Henson, the team’s captain and powerful try-scoring prop. He is out for his senior season with a knee injury.
While the Western Washington University men’s 7s team has been playing in tournaments though the fall, including winning the Bowl at the NCRC 7s Championships, the WWU 15s team has been playing some strong Canadian opposition.
