GRR: West Coast 7s
The West Coast Collegiate 7s series is back for this fall with events at Cal Poly and Treasure Island.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal won the first major college 7s tournament of the season on the West Coast, with both its teams going 8-0 at the West Coast 7s event hosted by Cal Poly.
UCLA took the West Coast 7s in dramatic fashion, defeating Arizona 17-14 with a try in the corner on the final play.
The Bruins were superb throughout the tournament, finding a way to get both speedster Eric Naposki and speedster Lucas Lacamp space to punish defenders. Much of that hinged on the vision of Shane Barry, who repeatedly set those two free.
Cal and Arizona looked in control Saturday in the West Coast 7s, winning all three of their pool games and not allowing a single point against.
UCLA and Cal Poly also won their pools. UCLA allowed just the one try, while Cal Poly was pushed the hardest, taking victories 24-12 over CCAC, 26-7 over USC, and 24-10 over a stubborn Utah side.
College sevens hasn't become massive in the fall, but it has its moments, and this weekend is one of them.
The West Coast 7s, PAC 7s, Boise State 7s, and recently-completed Red River 7s are all part of the fall calendar, and this weekend the West Coast 7s reigns.
