The University of Houston goes into the Southwest Rugby Conference 7s championships as the #1 seed after going 10-1 in the previous two tournaments.
In the opening tournament April 2, Houston defeated Texas State 38-0, Texas Tech 12-7, North Texas 31-7, North Texas Bs 31-12, and Sam Houston 24-12 in going 5-0.
The University of North Texas won the Southwest Conference title Saturday, beating Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.
As March is around the corner there’s the little matter of figuring out who will be in the Men’s DIAA playoffs.
The DIAA championship is starting to garner some interest around the nation, and programs realize this is a good post-season for smaller DI programs, clubs, and up-and-coming quasi-varsity teams.
There was much to prove when North Texas took on Rutgers Saturday in the ACRC Bowl Series.
UNT entered the weekend ranked #50 by Goff Rugby Report among fall DI teams. A loss to unranked Rutgers (a team close to the top 50 for sure) would likely have seen UNT dropped from the rankings.
The Southwest Conference kicks off this weekend with defending champion North Texas looking very solid.
UNT is coming off a win in the pre-season Texas Cup competition, defeating Texas Tech in the quarterfinals, a tough Baylor team in the semis, and then St. Edward’s in the final 40-36.
