In a fall 7s league that sees many teams struggle for consistent numbers, Doylestown is 8-0 and leading the Rugby Pennsylvania Girls High School 7s league. The repeat state champion won the opening West Shore 7s over a five-team field, and then won the Valkyries' tournament last weekend to head the standings.
West Chester University’s Tony DeRemer is shifting gears, transitioning from his DI varsity women’s team for the time being to work with Rugby Pennsylvania’s Girls All-Star team. The select side will represent the state at this weekend’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Cup Tournament, one of seven occurring during the next two weekends around the country.
The Valkyries knew it was going to be a special year, but the Pennsylvania team had something to prove heading into last weekend’s girls high school state championship.
Last weekend was an important one in Pennsylvania. Four of the top four high schools competed, and the results helped sort the upper tier of division I. The Valkyries (North Penn) defeated North Bay 36-17, and Downingtown beat State College 26-17.
There’s a lot of finger-pointing within the Pennsylvania girls high school league – the good kind. When North Bay beat both Downingtown (19-12) and Doylestown (51-10), coach Scott Hoffman was humble in victory and pointed toward North Penn as a potential state powerhouse.
