GRR: Rugby New York
Corning Lions Rugby Club High School Girls defeated Orchard Park Rugby Club 22-20 on Sunday to claim the program's first Rugby NY State Championship.
Led by captain and fullback Mykaela Reed as well as the brilliant play of No. 8 Kendra Close, Corning was able to overcome a 20-10 second half deficit to surprise six-time defending champion Orchard Park.
In a game played as a curtain-raiser for the local Major League Rugby game, Pelham HS defeated Rye HS 27-12 in Rugby NY action.

The big one, of course, was Okapi over Woodlands. In a very tight game neither team scored until the 20th minute. For both teams, this was something of a shocker. Woodlands generally scored at least 40 in every game and they often score early. For Okapi to hold them scoreless until the 26th minute was surprising.
Rugby NY capped off their fall 7s season crowning champions in four divisions and featuring teams from three states.
With various Connecticut participating in the tournaments, there was a Connecticut Varsity division, won by Greenwich, with Fresh Meadows and Cobra following.
