GRR: Royal Irish
St. Ignatius of Cleveland edged Royal Irish of Indianapolis 22-21 Saturday in a game between the #1 single-school team and the #2 HS club team.
It was a game where Royal Irish spent large periods in control of the run of play, but failed to get the tries they needed at the crucial moments.
Royal Irish is among the top HS clubs again this year, and St. Ignatius out of Cleveland just got put in the possibly unenviable position of being ranked #1 among single-school teams - now they will be playing each other.
Royal Irish defeated St. Edward 17-9 over the weekend in a game that said different things to the different coaches.
For St. Edward Coach Tom Cleary, the performance was a step forward after a 15-0 loss to the same Royal Irish team a week ago in the Lindenwood Tournament. St. Edward lost a couple of players to injury in that tournament but rebounded.
Royal Irish may have beaten St. Edward 15-0 during the Lindenwood Tournament last week, but you might also feel comfortable discounting that result.
The Lindenwood Tournament returned this weekend with six top HS teams in action Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, despite chilly and snowy conditions at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., all of the games were held.
