In a much anticipated clash between perennially highly-ranked high school teams, St. Edward of Ohio defeated Penn HS of Indiana 38-12.
The game, played at Penn's home fields in Indiana, was the first of the season for Penn and the third for St. Edward, and given the long lockdown COVID has imposed on teams throughout the rugby world, that first game back has often been a tough one.
There will always be freshmen to watch at Iowa Central Community College, because the school is a two-year institution, but we're giving you the first heads up on a powerful forward from Penn HS who is really one to watch.
"Alex Kennach is the real deal," said his high school coach, Bart Bottorff.
In a game where both teams had scoring opportunities only to see them go begging, Royal Irish garnered some measure of revenge in beating Penn HS for the Indiana state title over the weekend.
The Indiana Boys HS State Final will be a repeat of the Midwest final with Penn HS taking on Royal Irish Monday in Elkhart, Ind.
Penn defeated Brownsburg 29-12 Sunday to advance to the championship game, while Royal Irish defeated Fishers 29-5.
In the last two meetings between these two teams, Penn has won in close contests.
The Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Ind. will serve as the venue for this weekend’s Midwest Boys HS Championships.
Eight teams will compete in the Super Bracket, while ten teams participate in the Open Bracket.
