As Grand Valley State marches through one of the team’s better seasons, it’s pretty clear they have a pretty special group of players.
And while Calvin Schwandt and Reinhardt Stipp provide a very smart halfback combo, the heart and soul of the team is their forwards and, more specifically, their back row.
As we've been saying in recent weeks, D2 is like pouring oil on water—the oil floats on top of the water and the top 15-20 teams are significantly stronger than the other teams.
Yes there might be one or two exceptions, but we probably know who will advance in the playoffs. That means that there don't end up being a lot of matchups where we're thinking "hey, check this one out!"
Coastal Carolina's win over East Carolina has them probably the main contenders to challenge UNC Wilmington coming out of the Southern Rugby Conference.
The 20-17 victory follows up on their 61-45 defeat of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a close win over Lander has people talking.
The key, said Coast Head Coach Thomas Petit, is experience.

Grand Valley State had opened their season in impressive fashion.
Having beaten Great Midwest team Loyola in emphatic fashion the Lakers followed that with two wins this weekend. GVSU beat Notre Dame's 2nds in a close one, and then won their conference game over Calvin College 70-7.
"We got a good team effort in both games," said Head Coach John Mullett.
