GRR: Iowa Youth Rugby Association
Girls HS rugby around the USA is in a deep state of flux as COVID and competitive changes have had their effect.
Iowa Youth Rugby has launched its 7s season with 29 teams playing in three divisions.
The Boys 2A and Boys 1A competitions both have 10 teams involved, while the Girls 1A has nine teams duking it out. After week 1, we're already getting a sense of of who looks strong, with Ankeny (as usual), Fort Dodge, and CR Washington all going 2-0 in Boys 2A.
Actual rugby games in America may be few and far between but already Dakota Southworth made his presence known.
Iowa Central Community College’s metronomically active flanker was the player of the game in last week’s outing against Iowa State, and received kudos from both coaches.
“Their #7 just has an incredible work rate,” enthused Iowa Sate Head Coach Anthony Frein.
The Iowa Rugby Association crowns a champion this weekend with their final 7s tournament of the season.
Iowa plays only 7s in the spring, with a series of tournaments leading to seeding for the final tournament, which will be May 12.
Friday night it will be an eight-team knockout tournament.
It’s a small tournament, and as such one where almost anything can happen.
The Midwest Rugby Challenge will see two Illinois select teams in the Boys Varsity Bracket, as well as the Indy Speed and Des Moines.
