Conference and Rankings Decisions in D1A Weekend
The California Conference decided its champion last week with Saint Mary's defeating Cal Poly in what turned out to be a close one.
This week we decide who takes 2nd with Cal Poly playing upstarts UC Santa Barbara. It's likely that the Mustangs are favored, but this has still been a good year for the Gauchos and we could well see them in the postseason in some form.
Men D1A Rankings Week 23
What a weekend.
Saint Mary's beat Cal Poly 43-38. Central Washington beat UCLA 47-41. Navy beat Penn State 29-26. Arizona beat BYU 32-22. So much fun. We're very happy to have been at UCLA vs CWU in-person.
Win Over BYU a Big Step for Arizona
It's easy to overlook a consequential result when so many exciting games happened in D1A over the weekend, but it's important not to miss that Arizona beat BYU 32-22.
Arizona has been taking steps to show their improvement, but those steps were somewhat obscured by the fact they lost those games.
Almost an Upset; Cal Poly Pushes Saint Mary's in Moraga
Cal Poly pushed Saint Mary's in a rather surprising meeting of the top two teams in the California D1A Conference, but the Gaels held on 43-38.
The game started well for the Gaels. They moved into Cal Poly territory and spun it wide to freshman Aisake Tukuafu, who sped in to touch down. Ollie Cline slotted the extras and it was 7-0.
Thriller LA as Wildcats Edge Bruins
In one of the more evenly-matched high-scoring games in D1A, Central Washington pulled out a dramatic 47-41 win over UCLA Saturday in Southern California.
It's common to say a game was back-and-forth, but this one really was. Teams would answer try-for-try, both got into penalty trouble, and there was plenty of emotion, too.
