GRR: BYU
Friday opens up a big weekend for three major college teams, as St. Mary’s arrives in Utah to play the Utes on Friday and the BYU Cougars on Saturday.
New Mexico is a top-10 team, and that ranking hinged greatly on its one-point victory over Women’s Cougar Rugby (BYU) last November. Since then, the Lobos have remained relatively silent, while the Cougars have been active, and Saturday’s rematch looked nothing like the fall fixture. Host BYU dominated New Mexico during a 105-5 romp.
It was a heartbreaking loss for St. Mary’s. After leading at halftime and battling their way back from a deficit, the Gaels didn’t quite have enough time to overhaul BYU Saturday.
The Cougars won 32-28, reversing the result between the two in Moraga a year ago. But St. Mary’s Head Coach Tim O’Brien had the game in perspective.
BYU enjoyed a torrid opening to the second half of their clash with St. Mary’s and came away with a 32-28 victory between the two high-ranked college programs Saturday in Moraga, Calif.
Neither team backed away and it was a classic clash between the two - BYU using their size superiority to punish St. Mary’s tacklers, and the Gaels exploding for unexpected attacking moves.
Top teams face off Saturday #2 BYU visits #3 St. Mary’s in a clash of titans in Men’s College Rugby.
This is a two-game series we saw last year, when the teams split the series. It could well be they split again this time.
