Rugby Cancelations Due To Coronavirus
Rugby organizations around the USA have halted activities in order to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID19). They are working in conjunction with USA Rugby on these decisions.
While we have a long list below, it's all moot because USA Rugby's Board of Directors just voted to ban all rugby for 30 days.
From USA Rugby CEO, Ross Young: “It’s been an extraordinary period of time around the globe, whereby the rugby community is of course affected. While we evaluated as best we could to keep competitions intact, the situation has risen to a point where precautionary measures take precedent and is in the best interest of not only our members, but the general public.”
Still, here's more of what organizations have done:
Life University has suspended all athletic competition through the end of March.
Lindenwood has canceled its women's trip to California.
Grand Canyon, Iowa, Wheeling, Claremont Colleges, Eckerd, and many other universities have halted sporting activities.
Rugby Washington has delayed the start of its season for at least two weeks.
Rugby Oregon has canceled all practices and games through April 8.
Rugby NorCal has reportedly halted all youth and HS rugby for two weeks.
Rugby Ohio has postponed the start of its season and youth camps scheduled for this weekend in Cleveland and Columbus have been canceled.
Rugby NY is canceling games. New Rochelle, Dwight Academy, and FASNY hare all closed for two or three weeks. Keio Academy is closed for the remainder of the season. Pelham is in limbo, and Xavier is closed. So Rugby NY games are canceled until further notice.
Rugby PA has also suspended rugby until April 5.
The Come And Take It tournament hosted by The Woodlands Youth Rugby Club is canceled.
The Texas Rugby Union has told clubs it's up to them, but Rugby Texas has canceled HS rugby games through March 29
Rugby Virginia has halted its opening weekend of games.
The Florida Rugby Union is allowing senior club games and high school club games to go forward for this weekend, and allowing colleges that are allowed to play, to play. But games are canceled March 15-29.
North Carolina Youth Rugby - Update - Has canceled all rugby activities. This covers North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, as well. No return date is set. This despite the fact that the South Carolina Department of Education has not officially enacted a travel ban.
Because South Carolina and North Carolina have essentially merged their efforts, expect them to act in congress.
Phoenix Alpharetta in Georgia has suspended its season.
SoCal Youth Rugby has suspended all rugby until March 23.
Rugby New Jersey canceled games through April 12.
Several major Catholic schools with prominent rugby programs are shutting down for a few weeks.
Rugby Indiana is working with the State of Indiana to follow state policy. At present nothing is canceled as far as we know. The State has closed the two largest school districts. There is a tournament in Fort Wayne but that has been canceled.
Utah Youth Rugby has now confirmed that it will cancel all games through March 27.
Rugby Maryland has delayed the start of its season for two weeks.
No cancelations in Rugby Idaho as yet. They are monitoring the situation.
USA Rugby has canceled all in-person training and education events for this week at least, and canceled the National Development Tour event in Boston scheduled for this coming weekend. And in keeping with recommendations from the USOC, USA Rugby is acting in an advisory role and advising regions to follow local rules and be careful.
Major League Rugby has suspended operations for at least 30 days.
The Mid-Atlantic and Potomac club regions have canceled games.
Northern California RFU has canceled all games through April 5.
The Empire GU has suspended all ruby until April 26.
The New Orleans Collegiate 7s has been canceled.
The NCRC 7s scheduled for April 25-26 has been Canceled (maybe postponed)
World Rugby has postponed the Stellenbosch World 7s, part of the Women's HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series.
All D1A games this weekend are canceled:
Davenport at Life
Saint Mary's at BYU
Cal at Utah
UCLA at SD State
UC Davis at GCU
Utah State at Central Washington
Wisconsin at Baylor (March 17)
Wisconsin at Texas A&M (March 19)
And the games March 21 and March 28 are also canceled.
D1A Season Suspended Until April 5
The Gold Coast Rugby Conference has halted play, with CSULB and Arizona State tied at 3-1 in the D1AA section of the conference.
