Gamebreakers In HS Rugby This Week
Several teams raised trophies over the weekend in Boys High School rugby, and some of their players produced massive performances to get them there.
Here's a rundown of our Gamebreakers this week:
Colin Cunningham, Clayton HS
Some excellent box kicking allowed Clayton HS to pin Brought back in their own 22, and tha all came from the Clayton HS scrumhalf, Cunningham. With Cunningham pushing the pace and helping pin Brought back, Clayton stormed back to win the North Carolina semifinal over their rivals.
Brian Finley, Jacksonville
The hard-hitting Wolverines prop scored a try and led the defensive effort as Jacksonville beat Tampa.
Trey Brown, Cardinal Gibbons
Gibbons lost a very close game 22-19 to Okapi, and helping them hang tough was inside center Trey Brown, who was excellent on defense.
Andre Lopez, Marin
On tour in the United Kingdom, Marin beat Llantwit out of Wales, and Lopez ran in three tries in the victory.
Luke Cheramie, Providence Panthers
The Panthers led the effort in the rucks and the scrums, and scored two tries as Providence beat Charlotte Catholic in the North Carolina Single-School semifinals.
Solomon Williams, Carlsbad
Williams was excellent in running the attack and kicking for goal as Carlsbad defeated Servite to win the Southern California Varsity White championship.
Tom Dixon, Woodlands
Wins over Strake Jesuit and the Kansas City Junior Blues launched The Woodlands to the #1 ranking among High School Clubs, and at the center of that is No. 8 Dixon, who leads the team on attack, gets the dirty work done, and plays excellent defense. Dixon has committed to Cal to play rugby.
Brett Craven, Phoenix Alpharetta
Playing lock, Craven helped Georgia's Phoenix to two victories over the weekend with his solid play in the set piece and with some key carries and tackles.
Peter Mazolewski, De La Salle
The Spartan wing ran in two tries and was a danger just about every time he touched the ball as De La Salle defeated Jesuit in the NorCal Single-School final.
Travis Hall, St Augustine
The Southern California SCIRF league final saw St. Augustine beat San Clemente and Hall logged a massive among of work and also led the defensive effort for the Saints.
Eli Ziglinski, Gregory The Great
Playing flyhalf, Ziklinski cam close to orchestrating a huge upset. Gonzaga held on to beat GGA by a point, but they had all sorts of trouble with Ziklinski, whose ability to launch massive kicks from the hand kept the Eagles backpedaling.
