Marina HS Faces Challenge In SoCal Week 2
Marina HS Faces Challenge In SoCal Week 2
Week Two of the Southern California Youth Rugby boys HS season is here already.
(What's happening in the SCIRF league is here: Experienced Saints Head Into 1st SCIRF League Game and here: Bosco Revels In Rugby, Football Double Success )
Here's a look at this weekend's games.
California HS vs Warren HS (Los Angeles Division league game)
Wilson HS vs Marina HS
Marina already has a win under its belt with a defeat of California HS. Head Coach Kirk Temple wasn't too carried away with the victory, adding that he expects Wilson HS, every year one of the toughest teams in the region, to be a more difficult prospect.
Still, it's worth noting that the growth of the Vikings has had an effect throughout the school. Yes, that's right, we're talking about football again. After winning about one game a year for the last few years, Marina unleashed a 12-3 record this season under Head Coach Jeff Turley. Temple is an assistant coach on that football team.
"Coach Turley is a strong believer in rugby and how it can help the football team," said Temple. Certainly the Marina HS football team's tackling is much improved.
On the rugby field, meanwhile, keep an eye on No. 8 (and football running back) Brantt Riederich, outside center Calbe Dochnahl, and props Cade Temple and Drake Jackman, who set the tone for a team that is quickly garnering a reputation.
(They also have a reputation as the best pulled pork as post-match meal, so there's that.)
Great Oak HS vs Murrieta Valley HS
Del Norte at Westview HS (SD South league game)
Del Norte is a solid program that has to have an eye on unseating La Jolla in the division.
SoCal Varsity White Scores Week 1:
La Jolla 52-0 Patrick Henry
Mater Dei 38-27 Point Loma
Valley Center Jaguars 55-12 Alta Vista
Servite 34-26 St. Anthony
Carlsbad 75-0 Mission Vista
Marina 29-12 California HS
Murrieta Valley 47-7 Rancho Bernardo
