Boys High School rugby is back for another season with Southern California's single-school competitions about to get underway.

Two different groups of single-school teams are in action, one run under California Interscholastic Federation regulations and one under the oversight of the Southern California Youth Rugby Association. Here's a look:

SCIRF

In a week we're set for an expanded Season 2 of the So Cal Interscholastic Rugby Federation (SCIRF).

The SCIRF runs its season in conjunction with the scheduling for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), with the schools involved following CIF regulations. Officially the Winter Season window started November 9, and teams are already in training and kick off the league next week.

Due to the efforts of various SCIRF High School athletic directors over the past six months, SCIRF has expanded to include a Gold Division for new and emerging rugby programs. San Marcos High School, Granite Hills High School, Mission Bay High School, Steele Canyon High School, and Coronado High School will make up the Gold Division and will integrate with the Open Division teams for non-league games where applicable.

SCIRF leadership is also developing a rugby program with Lincoln High with hopes of them being ready to play toward the end of the CIF Winter season.

League play kicks off December 13 when Fallbrook visits Torrey Pines and San Clemente hosts La Costa Canyon. Cathedral Catholic and St Augustine start their season on December 21. With defending champion St. John Bosco still in the California state football playoffs (they play another solid rugby program, De La Salle, next week), their schedule is still to be confirmed.

The top two SCIRF teams in the Platinum Division will play the top two teams from Northern California in early March to determine the California State Champion. Jesuit of Sacramento won last year's final over Bosco.

SCYR also kicks off next week with a single-school leagues. This group doesn't follow the CIF regulations per se but the key thing for SCYR is to cover all of the geographic areas of Southern California. While the SCIRF league is a mixture of San Diego and schools between San Diego and Los Angeles, there are an increasing number of single-school rugby teams developing throughout the region.

SCYR has five divisions: Los Angeles, Orange County Coast, Orange County Inland, San Diego North, and San Diego South.

Most of these teams will start playing in January, but Saint Anthony of the LA Division plays a non-league game against OC Coast team Servite HS on December 13.

LA Division: California HS, Saint Anthony, Warren HS, Wilson HS

OC Coast: Corona Del Mar, Los Alamitos HS, Marina HS, San Juan, Servite HS

OC Inland: Corona Centennial, Great Oak HS, Murrieta Valley, Norco HS, Roosevelt HS

While Murrieta Valley has some warmup games, most of the teams in the Orange County Inland won't start until January 3. San Diego, however, will be active. Alta Vista is slated to play Jaguars, and Mission Vista faces Carlsbad HS. The 5th team in San Diego North, Rancho Bernardo, plays Murrieta Valley in a non-league game.

And in San Diego South, Del Norte plays Westview HS, La Jolla plays Patrick Henry, and Mater Dei takes on Point Loma.

San Diego South: Del Norte, La Jolla, Mater Dei, Patrick Henry, Point Loma, Westview

This is a significant increase in single-school teams in SoCal. And more are coming, as SCYR has a 7s league for up-and-coming programs. But SCIRF and SCYR together have 37 high schools playing in a single-school league through February.
