Gamebreakers Men DI Sept 13-14
The Gamebreakers column is back with a vengeance—here are our Men's DI college standouts for the weekend of September 13-14.
It's a front-row kind of weekend, but we've got some backs in there, too.
Tay Jones, Louisville
Jones was a standout football player at Franklin-Simpson HS in Kentucky, but joined the rugby team at Louisvile last year. He has worked his way up the ranks and this past weekend made his 1st XV debut for Louisville, scoring two tries in a win over Dayton.
Connor Buckley, Iona
Iona may have lost this past weekend, but not because of Buckley. The former Xavier HS scrumhalf and current All American clocked a kick to create a try and set up another. He was excellent on defense and ran the attack, and he and John Powers kept Iona close against Navy.
Damon James, Mount St. Mary’s
The Mount speedster scored a try at the death to defeat NC State 29-26.
Tom Capriotti, Penn State
While the backs scored most of the tries, Penn State’s win over Notre Dame College probably was more due to the hard work Capriotti put in at hooker and, later, No. 8. The versatile Capriotti did score a try but it was his set piece work and his defense, especially a turnover he created to end the game, and set him apart.
Connor Robinson, Boston College
Robinson got the Eagles going against Fairfield with a try in the first half, and then scored a key try late to seal the 40-27 victory.
Case Fleck, Indiana
The IU flyhalf is starting to take control of the attack, and has led the Hoosiers to two very important victories in the last two weeks. Against Notre Dame this past weekend he scored a key try at the end of the first half and ran the backline well against a solid Irish team.
Josh Ressio, Michigan State
Ressio scored a try with one minute remaining in the Big 10 clash between Michigan State and Illinois. The try turned a 24-20 deficit into a 25-24 victory for Michigan State.
Colin Stiller, Towson
Stiller, who plays hooker for Towson (receiving the pass, wearing #2), scored twice and led from the front in a key 45-10 victory over IUP in the MARC.
Nick D’Angelo, West Chester
The Rams scrumhalf scored four tries as WCU slammed West Virginia 64-10.
Bo Kendrick-Holmes, Andrew Malick, Adam Tounkara, Navy
The Navy front row played a crucial role in handling the scrum and setting the platform for a 53-29 Navy win over Iona.
Keyon McCloud-Holman, Kutztown
The hard-hitting prop was superb in tight play against Army as Kutztown knocked off the Black Knights.
