The Liberty Conference got into action this weekend with some interesting results that thrust a couple of teams into the contender category; that's kind of a long way of saying watch out for Northeastern.

In a conference crossover match, Iona held Navy close for about 50 minutes, in fact it was tied at that point. But a bigger, more powerful Navy side pulled away in the final half hour to win comfortably 53-29. While Iona got a superb game from scrumhalf Connor Buckley, Navy finished much the stronger.

"We saw a lot of handling errors from us which led to us being under unnecessary pressure," said Navy Head Coach Gavin Hickie. "We are working hard to expand our attack and we saw glimpses of that today. But we have a number of areas we need t work hard. Coach [Bruce] Mcane's Iona are always a very tough team to play against."

Liberty

While Iona was playing a non-conference match, the Liberty Conference got into action.

SUNY Cortland pulled off a nice win to start the season, beating Colgate 23-12.

Binghamton looked very good in beating Brockport 34-14. Joe LoPinto scored two tries while Peter Klopp added one, as did Alan Kim.   

Syracuse backed up a nice win over Brockport last week with an equally convincing victory over SUNY Oswego. Sam Low and Matty Kennelly scored tries to stake Syracuse to a 15-7 halftime lead. Oswego hung in there and looked to have a promising attack going when Aidan Kelly intercept a pass and go the distance. That kind of took the wind out of Oswego sails, and tries from Joe Jackson and Colby Clayton sealed it.

Boston College enjoyed a weird one over Fairfield. Tries from Connor Robinson, James Thornton, and Riley Curtin staked the Eagles to a 21-3 halftime lead. Quin Kelly added another try, but then Fairfield started to find its rhythm, and clawed back to within eight at 35-27. That's when Harry Sullivan stole the ball and set up Robinson for his second. That sealed it for BC.

Most impressive was Northeastern, which smacked Rhode Island 60-3. Rhode Island hung tough last week, but behind braces by Nick Hudson and Sam Moyle, Northeastern controlled the game  throughout. Will Yorke, Sam Sagherian, Coulson Wiggan, Rhett Dawson, Matt Urrea, and Alex Parciak all scored tries for the Huskies, who now have everyone else on notice.

Fordham was also impressive, beating Rutgers 61-6. Nic D’Amato, Tony Kutz, and prop Jack Brennan staked Fordham to an early21-0 lead.

Continued pressure from the Rams saw Pat Stack, captain Jared Smallwood, and freshman Giovanni Sabelli also cross for scores. Center Jack McCarrisk had a strong day kicking, while Slack ended up with three tries on the day.
