SCIRF Latest: Cathedral Wins Big One

The SCIRF goes on as rivals Cathedral and Torrey Pines, two teams less than a mile apart, renewed their rivalry last Saturday.

Cathedral, off to a blistering start, jumped to a quick 12-0 lead thanks to two tries by Miles McCormick. Chris Buonarati converted one of the tries from a difficult angle.

Torrey Pines fought back with effective pick and goes off their rucks. The tactic worked as prop Alex Brown was able to put Torrey on the board with a try from the base of the ruck on Cathedral’s goal line. Torrey fullback Oren Cargill converted the try and added a penalty making the score 12-10 Cathedral at the half

Cathedral kicked to Torrey to open the second half and was able to keep pressure on Torrey, keeping them in their half. Off a ruck on the right sideline Cathedral was able to swing the ball across the field resulting in an unconverted try by center Ethan Simley making the score 17-10 Cathedral.

Back and forth both teams went and Torrey was able to close the gap to 17-16 on two penalties by Cargill. With six minutes to go Cathedral’s McCormick executed a quick tap and go off a Torrey penalty and touched down in the corner for an unconverted try, CC 22- TP 16.

CC took Torrey’s kickoff and through phase play got to midfield. An offside on Torrey call allowed to CC to kick to touch, retain possession from the ensuing lineout and through a multi-phased attack down and across McCormick scored his fourth try of game under the posts, converted by Buonarati.

Final score CC 29 TP16.

Cathedral goes to 2-0 and Torrey to 1-2 in SCIRF play.

Also over the weekend, St. Augustine moved to 5-0 with a 34-10 defeat of San Clemente. The league season culminates Feb 16 with St. Augustine vs Cathedral. This could be a clash of undefeated teams, althought the Saints have to get by Torrey Pines first, and CC meets St. John Bosco on February 9, which won't be easy.
