USA Women Win Plate at Amsterdam 7s
The USA Women’s 7s team won the Plate at the Amsterdam 7s, defeating Russia 27-12 in the Plate Final, and recording one of their better tournaments for the season.
Braces from Hannah Lopez and Victoria Folayan had earlier seen the overpower Brazil 34-0, while Russia ran out 28-0 winners over France in the other semi-final with Ekaterina Kazakova and Nadezda Kudinova both touching down twice.
The USA lost to New Zealand and to Canada (in a close one), but shut out Spain, Ireland, and Brazil during the tournament. The Eagles end the 2013-2014 IRB World Series season in 7th.
"I'm very proud of the way the women played; very courageous and very creative," said USA Head Coach Ric Suggitt, who also thanked members of the US Military who cheered the Eagles on. For Suggitt, it was a "very risky season" as he started a lot of young and untried players. But the idea was to get them ready to play next year.
"We tried a lot of different players and it's been a success ... hopefully we've put all the things in the right places to be successful next year," Suggitt said.
But this was the year to experiment, said Suggitt, as he and the USA look ahead to Olympic Qualifying next season.
