Awards, Milestones, Notoriety as USA Finishes 4th in London
Scotland defeated England to win the final Sevens World Series tournament of the season, in London.
South Africa were awarded the trophy they’d clinched last week. And the USA finished 4th in the tournament, losing 22-19 to Canada. But the key game for the Eagles was earlier on Day Two, when they beat Australia behind three tries from Perry Baker and two from Maka Unufe. That win ensured the USA would not be overtaken by the Aussies in the World Series standings.
It was a bit of an odd tournament for the USA, as they lost to Wales, but managed to shut out Kenya 47-0 and beat mighty South Africa, as well.
That put them in the quarterfinals where they beat Australia, before falling to Scotland and Canada to take 4th.
So in the end the USA didn’t claim a tournament win, but did log all-time-best numbers just about everywhere else. The Eagles finished 5th in the World Series, with 129 points, eight behind 4th-place New Zealand and 16 ahead of Australia.
Perry Baker led the Series with 57 tries and 285 points, after leading the London 7s in tries with eight. USA captain Madison Hughes finished 3rd in the Series with 279. Stephen Thomasin was 12th in the Series with 27 tries, and was second in tackles with 156, just two behind Phillip Snyman of South Africa. Hughes was 5th with 143 tackles.
Baker also led the Series with 76 clean breaks, an astounding 17 more than the next player, Dan Norton of England.
Baker and Danny Barrett were named to the World Series Dream Team, with Baker narrowly missing player of the year honors.
