NJ Latest - Delbarton, Unon Win
Delbarton defeated Hudson Catholic 69-0 to remain undefeated in New Jersey in the single-school league.
The Green Wave’s first XV has not lost to a New Jersey team in well over two years, but has gone about .500 in a few matches out of state (wins over St. Thomas and LaSalle College HS, close losses to St. Xavier and St. Mary’s Secondary School, Ontario). They outscored their in-state opponents 140-15 in four matches this year.
Delbarton will be the #1 seed in NJ’s playoff bracket with St. Augustine taking the #2 spot and CBA/St. Peter’s Prep playing for the #3 and #4 seed this week.
In HS Club league, the Union Mudturtles moved to 5-0 with a commanding 69-12 win over Highlander.
That sets up a game next week between Union County and Bridgewater - both undefeated teams.
Bridgewater, led by senior captain and hooker Pat Hoey, has been playing some excellent rugby.
For the Mudturtles, Sean MacLaney, a winter HS All American camp invitee and standout scrumhalf has worked the tempo on a high-scoring offense. In the backs, inside center Ryan Dones (11 tries) has taken control of the midfield while Hunter Musson has made 23 of 29 conversions. This past week's game against 3rd place in the league Highlander Rugby saw the Mudturtle squad spread the ball wide in the opening minute with a scrum on the right side of the field converting to a try on the far left side of the field when fullback Peter Morariu finished of the drive.
Dones went on to score five tries in th game, with Pat Orth getting two and Sebastien Morales, MacLany, and Tom Greey also scoring.
Dones and Morales shared player of the game honors.
