Wando Finishes Regular League Season Unbeaten
Wando HS is now 5-0 and has clinched the #1 spot in the Rugby South Carolina boys DI league with a 29-0 defeat of Greenville.
“It was a complete performance,” enthused Head Coach Tod Shepherd, whose B team also beat Charleston in DII action. “Greenville has a good defensive team and pressured our backs and gave us a good test.”
No. 8 and captain Joe Schmidt scored two tries, while lock Joe Griffin and hooker Jake Morris scored another. Scrumhalf Charlie van Vliet kicked nine points.
Arthur Doyle was the best forward on the game, making gains with the ball and playing excellent defense, while van Vliet was the top back, and center Josh Cummins was a close second thanks to his defense. Flyhalf Caleb Calandra and the center pairing of Cummins and Huw Meredith didn't miss a tackle all game, and contained a good Greenville attack. Cumm the entire game. They were key in stopping the Greenville attack.
Morris was excellent at hooker, poaching the ball in the rucks, making good lineout throws, and scrummaging well. He scored off a quick tap on a penalty.
It was, overall, an impressive showing for the defending champs as they had into the playoffs next week.
