FIU First Spring 7s Qualifier
FIU First Spring 7s Qualifier
The spring college 7s season still has plenty to go before it culminates with the USA 7s National Championships and then the CRC, but it is underway.
The first big winner is Florida International, which swept both South Independent Rugby Conference tournaments to take the first automatic bid for USA Rugby's DI Nationals. FIU won the 1st round in fairly dominant fashion, dispatching North Florida, Central Florida, Georgia Southern, South Florida, UNF (again), and Kennesaw State in the final, never scoring fewer then 24 points and never giving up more than 12. Overall, in the six games FIU allowed only 31 points and scored 189.
In the second event, FIU once again swept the field, beating Middle Tennessee State twice, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Memphis, and Central Florida. This time, they did indeed have a close game, winning the final over MTSU 19-14.
Still, they were good.
"We're just happy to qualify and we're pretty excited to show what we can do on the national stage," said FIU's Mateo Velasquez.
No other team was obviously second-best in the SIRC. Kennesaw State took second in series points, but was surpassed by MTSU and Central Florida in th 2nd tournament. KSU, MTSU, and UCF all showed themselves to be teams with potential.
