The Mira Costa Mustangs clinched 1st in the Los Angeles conference of the Southern California Varsity Red division with 39-10 defeat of St. John Bosco  

Both Mira Costa and Bosco went into the game undefeated in league play at 4-0. Both were already securely in the Varsity Red semifinals, but a win here would give the victors home field advantage.

Ranked #10 by Goff Rugby Report, Mira Costa was certainly favored over #33 St. John Bosco and the Mustangs did indeed play well in handling the big, physical Braces.

The Mustangs kicked off and immediately pressured Bosco. Costa wanted to use their speed and athleti­cism to counter-balance the Bosco size, and that would be one of the stories of the game. Early in the first half, Mira Costa got a penalty and kicked to touch for the lineout. Costa's Alec Oshita won the lineout (as he did every lineout for the entirety of the match), and linked up with No. 8 Jonah Tavai, and with Tavai holding the ball the Mustangs forwards put together a nicely cohesive maul and powered over from 13 meters out.

Flyhalf Kaden Loversky added the con­version, and four minutes later the Mustangs again used Tavai off a lineout for the No. 8's second.

Mira Costa liked their pace, but also used the kicking game to great effectiveness, forcing Bosco to play a long field.

It was a kick, in fact, that led to Mira Costa's next try, as Loversky booted a high ball, chased, recovered the ball on one bounce, and scampered in for the try from just under 40 meters out. The kicking game again came into play as Tavai found touch off a Bosco penalty. The ensuing lineout was once again won by Oshita, who offloaded to Tavai for his third of the game. The half ended with the Mustangs again threatening, but they were held out and it remained 24-0.

The Braves finally found the tryline three minutes into the second half, as their impressive No. 8, George Holani, took the ball on a 5-meter scrum and powered over. However, the Mustangs replied quickly. They took the kickoff and ran phase after phase until they were given a penalty on the Bosco five-meter line. Captain and scrumhalf Harrison Dulgarian alertly quick-tapped and darted in for the try.

Bosco responded by driving the ball down to the Mira Costa 5-meter-line. The Costa defense hung tough in a physical goal-line stand, but Bosco did well to keep possession and eventually made it over the line to make it 29-10 Mira Costa.

Once again, Mira Costa scored right after conceding a try. Wing Evanson Franck-Love raced down a Lov­ersky kick, collected the ball off the bounce, made two moves to beat defenders, and then offloaded to fullback Sean Walker for the try.  The final score came  when hard-working flanker Gunnar Kissman took a pass from Dul­garian and blew by the Braves from 22 meters out to make it 39-10.

Mira Costa ends the regular season 5-0, with Bosco dropping to 4-1. Costa will host Torrey Pines, who lost to La Costa Canyon Friday night (Last-Second Try Sees LCC by Torrey Pines) while Bosco will visit LCC.
