BYU Thumps Cal Poly
BYU opened its 2017 spring season with a 91-3 defeat of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo Thursday night.
Wing Kevin Schofield carried on his torrid scoring pace from last season with two early tries. No. 8 Jackson Kaka and flanker Wineera Elkington both scored to make it 28-3 in the first half - Calvin Whiting was good on all four conversion attempts - before Schofield got his third and center Zach Webber made it 38-3 at the break.
It wasn't any easier for the Mustangs in the second period as Tua Laei scored three minutes in. Kaka got his second and then Ara Elkington touched down twice before Webber got his second. Schofield, who was a Scholz Award nominee last season, scored his fourth and then David George, Whiting, Conner Parry, and George again made it 91-3. Whiting ended up with eight conversions and a try for 21 points on his own. Schofield scored 20 with four tries.
BYU faces San Diego State on Saturday in San Diego.
