The commissioners of the DIA Conferences have voted unanimously to accept BYU as an independent team effective immediately, say sources.

BYU will play a non-conference schedule, and will be eligible for the playoffs based on the team's ranking in the D1A Rankings. BYU will adhere fully with USA Rugby eligibility rules - this is a slight departure from how they handled the Varsity Cup, because the Varsity Cup has operated under slightly different rules. The BYU rugby program is already in the process of submitting player paperwork, and the D1A leadership is already looking at players who raise a question.

It is not entirely clear what this means for BYU in the Varsity Cup. Calls to BYU Head Coach David Smyth and Varsity Cup manager Jon Hinkin were not immediately returned.
