US HS Teams Tested as Harrow Tours
Harrow School from England is touring the USA, playing teams on both coasts in a trip put together by Varsity Travel.
Varsity Travel runs rugby tours to the US and also for USA teams going abroad, finding the right competition for them and additional cultural experiences.
"We've had a great time so far," said James Melville, who is a teacher and coach at Harrow School and traveling with the team.
Harrow started against the Bergen Barbarians of New Jersey, with the game won by Harrow 80-0 in hot, humid conditions. Then it was on to Cheshire, Conn. where Harrow defeated a Rugby Connecticut all-star team 102-0, with the JVs winning 77-0.
"The scores do not quite reflect the matches as both were physical encounters," said Melville.
Then on Saturday the Harrow team boarded a plane to Seattle where they faced perennial contenders Liberty HS.
"We have been hosted brilliantly and both our boys and coaches have had a truly memorable time with Liberty," said Melville. "They are a proper old-school rugby club, preaching all the right rugby values!"
Against Liberty, Harrow had their toughest outings yet. The JV team led 19-12 at halftime before pulling away 44-19.
"Aa very physical encounter but our second half fitness paid off," said Melville.
The Varsity score was 62-0, but Melville said he understood it was Liberty's off-season, and the game was very physical and a good test.
So now on to San Francisco, where Northern California all-star team awaits on Thursday, and then two more games in Los Angeles.
"It's been a great tour so far and we've been really well received throughout," said Melville, whose father is former USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville. "With my own personal family connection to rugby in the USA, it's fantastic to see the grassroots development of the game and see (perhaps!) my Dad's legacy first hand. I've hugely enjoyed meeting lots of young kids who have just started playing or high school kids in love with the game already which just shows how far the game has developed in the last 10 years and will hopefully continue to develop in the USA for many years to come."
