Men's Olympic Draw Confirmed
Men's Olympic Draw Confirmed
The Men's Rugby 7s Olympic draw was confirmed in Tuesday, June 28 in an announcement in Rio de Janeiro.
The Men's Rugby 7s competition will be held August 9 to 11 at the Deodoro Olympic Park. The 12 teams in the competition were seeded based on World Series finish in the last two years, or by World Rugby if they didn't play in the World Series. Then the seeds were assigned their pools, Seed #1 in Pool A, #2 in Pool B, and #3 in Pool C. Then #4 was put in Pool C, and the assignments weaved back and forth through the pools.
Here's how it worked out:
Pool A
Fiji
USA
Argentina
Brazil
Pool B
South Africa
Australia
France
Spain
Pool C
New Zealand
Great Britain
Kenya
Japan
This is a good draw for the USA. it won't be easy - they have lost to both Argentina and Fiji in recent memory - but they have also recorded wins against those teams. The top eight go into the quarterfinals, so the top two from each pool, plus the two best 3rd-place teams will enter the knockout rounds with a shot at a medal. So points difference will be crucial for many teams.
The toughest pool is probably Pool C in that New Zealand and Great Britain are thinking medal, but Kenya certainly has the ability to beat either of those teams, and has done so.
