Chargers and Nicolet Renew Rivalry in Wisconsin Final
The Chargers will take on in-conference rivals Nicolet in the Wisconsin boys HS final on Saturday.
Nicolet, the #2 team out of the Badgerland Conference, defeated Northeast Wisconsin winners the Pulaski Roos 31-18 Wednesday in the semifinals.
The Chargers, the Badgerland winners, took down Badgerland #3 Elkhorn 60-5.
For the first time all season, the Chargers were able to run out a fully-healthy side, but then five minutes in outside center Beau Goudreau had to leave the field and the Chargers were using backups again.
“The boys stepped up,” said Chargers Head Coach Niel Mattek. “We worked on running to space and creating dangerous lines all week and the boys executed perfectly.”
Flyhalf Sean Mattek ran the offense nicely and sophomore Bailey Fetterer was a big beneficiary of Mattek’s vision, scoring three tries.
Elkhorn was big and physical, but the Chargers handled that well enough and used their ball skills to spread the field.
So the final is set, and this is a matchup that ended in a 5-0 Chargers win on April 23.
In that game, wing Derek Matz scored in the corner in the 65th minute and that was it for the points by either team.
Both teams enter Saturday with a ton of confidence.
Also in Wisconsin, the Muskego Warriors defeated the Chargers DII team to make the DII final. There, they will face the Madison Exiles, which beat the Green bay Leprechauns 17-7 in the semis. This, like the DI final, will be a matchup of the top two teams from the Badgerland Conference.
Both finals will be held Saturday at the Wisconsin Rugby Complex in Cottage Grove, Wisc.
