West Point Men Seek Coach

The Director of Rugby of the US Military Academy at West Point is seeking qualified candidates to become the men’s Head Rugby Coach on or about 10 July 2014. The successful candidate will be a contract employee of the Military Academy. Compensation will be commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. West Point Rugby Mission
West Point Rugby develops leaders of character who are infused with leadership skills, the warrior ethos, an appreciation of teamwork and an unyielding winning spirit in preparation for service as commissioned officers in the United States Army.

West Point Rugby Vision -- West Point Rugby will be:

1. The best leadership development experience at West Point.

2. A high performance collegiate rugby program consisting of elite cadet-athletes who use military training techniques and a military organizational structure to be perennially competitive for a rugby national championship.

Scope of work:

The Head Coach will report to the Director of Rugby and work in cooperation with the Officer-in-Charge of the men’s team (a commissioned officer in the US military).

Position is for a Head Coach for a Division IA collegiate men’s rugby team playing in both 15’s and 7’s formats. Two seasons currently run from Mid-August to early December and mid-March to early June totaling approximately 33 weeks.

The Head Coach will deal daily with approximately 36 varsity level players and utilize 2 to 4 volunteers as Assistant Varsity Coaches. Volunteer coaches will largely be uniformed military officers, civilian instructors or staff assigned to the US Military Academy.

Head Coach will have a small budget to bring in subject matter experts to assist in teaching specific skills.

Head Coach will also mentor a volunteer, junior-varsity coaching staff that will train 36 junior- varsity players as a feeder system and a replacement stream for the varsity team. The Junior-Varsity Team competes in Div IAA. Volunteer coaches will largely be uniformed military officers, civilian instructors or staff assigned to the US Military Academy.

Players will normally train a minimum of four days a week after academic classes (usually 4:30 to 6:45 PM) and compete every weekend in season. Competition may necessitate overnight travel with the team.

The Head Coach will also be available beyond practice times for administrative and logistic responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Rugby during the two playing seasons.

The Head Coach must be able to reside and work in the United States.

For up to two weeks each summer, the Head Coach will serve as the Director of Instruction for rugby summer camps for boys and girls from 13 to 17 years of age.
