Six Jesuit Colleges in 7s Tournament
Santa Clara University is hosting the Jesuit Cup 7s tournament this weekend, with six Jesuit colleges from around the USA participating.
The tournament was the brainchild of Northern California-based businessman Andy Schatzman, whose sone, Danny, plays for Boston College. The idea was to fundraise to help defray travel costs, and to expose West Coast Jesuit schools to the rugby of the schools in the East.
The tournament includes Boston College, Santa Clara, University of Notre Dame, St. Joseph’s, Gonzaga University, and Loyola-Marymount. Five different states are represented, with the two Californian teams coming from the Northern and Southern ends.
Fundraising has provided airfare, meals, field costs, trainers, refs, and kit, as well as billeting for the players. The games themselves will be held at Buck Shaw Stadium on the Santa Clara campus.
The tournament runs through Sunday, and on Friday night the teams attend a dinner where former Australian rugby player and current San Francisco 49er Jarryd Haynes will speak.
The tournament will be streamed live by Next Level Rugby. Here are the links:
