No surprise that Gonzaga HS won the Jesuit Rugby Classic, but there were a few notable results aside from that.

On Saturday in pool play, Gonzaga's A side beat Myers Park of North Carolina 55-7, and Delbarton out of New Jersey 31-0. Also 2-0 was Greenwich, which defeated West End (Virginia) 34-19 and Good Counsel (Maryland) 26-0. Fort Hunt out of Virginia also went 2-0, beating Gonzaga's 2nd side (Gonzaga Black) 42-0 and St. Xavier (Ohio) 24-0. Charlotte Catholic defeated West Shore 24-19 and Archmere Academy 33-5 to finish out the list of 2-0 teams.

Archmere did pull off something of an upset, beating West Shore, while Good Counsel defeated West End, which is a small shocker in that West End is ranked, and Good Counsel is not (for now).

So on to the semifinals, where Fort Hunt shocked Greenwich with a 24-0 scoreline. THe game was only 7-0 at halftime, but Fort Hunt prevailed in the physical clash. Gonzaga defeated Charlotte Catholic 24-12 in a game that Gonzaga led 24-0 before Charlotte Catholic scored late.

So on to the final games. 

For 3rd place, Greenwich had been hit by injury but saw Luke Bienstock score in the first two minutes, and outside center Kevin Wright also scored to stake Greenwich to a two-try lead. In the 18th minute, Wright caught an offload by Luke Bienstock to tally his second try of the game. One minute later, lock Jake Herman broke loose and ran sixty meters to set up Nat Ung for a try. Charlotte Catholic bounced back impressively and did not fall aprt. But Bienstock scored his third, and flyhalf Fermin Moriz also scored for Greenwich while Charlotte put in two tries in the second half to make it 36-21 Greenwich.

And in the final, Gonzaga shut out Fort Hunt 24-0 to win the tournament.

In the Plate bracket, Archmere defeated Gonzaga Black 21-17 to make the final, while Good Counsel beat Delbarton. Then Good Counsel beat Archmere to win that final

Below, Charlotte Catholic was 2-0 on the first day and perhaps a little unlucky on the second.
