Bowl Runners-Up for USA in Singapore
The USA finished runners-up in the Bowl at the Singapore 7s, losing 14-10 to Scotland in the final game.
The Eagles beat Russia fairly comfortably, and then shut out Portugal in the Bowl semis - that game was notable in part because Nate Ebner got his first try for the USA, staking the Eagles to a 7-0 halftime lead.
Maka Unufe, Ebner again, and Ebner’s old USA U19 teammate, Zack Test, touched down in the second half for a dominating 26-0 win. Both of Ebner’s tries were him being in a good support spot for the pass. Zack Test drew some attention before offloading - and it was good to see Ebner think run first, instead of pass.
The second was a brilliant piece of work from Martin Iosefo to penetrate and pass, before Peter Tiberio popped the pass to Ebner. (Video of those two tries is here.)
But against Scotland, a poor first half led to Scotland leading 14-0. Tries from Test and Unufe get the Eagles within a score, but it took them far too long to get over the line, and there wasn’t really time to do any more.
Meanwhile, Kenya pulled off a somewhat improbably tournament victory, which is a big boost to that country’s fortunes. Argentina finished 3rd. Both of those countries gained markedly on the USA in the World Series standings. The USA is 5th with 95 points, having lost some ground to the top four - Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. But they also saw Argentina gain eight points to sit 6th with 92, and Kenya gained 15 points on the USA and sit 7th with 85.
Two more tournaments remains - Paris and London - before the series ends and all eyes look to Rio.
