UC Davis, Virginia to DI Women Final
UC Davis, Virginia to DI Women Final
The USA Rugby women's DI (spring) final is set with Virginia and UC Davis winning their playoff brackets this weekend.
The teams will clash May 7 at St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. Officially this will be dubbed the DI Spring Championships because UConn won the fall playoffs. But, considering that UConn has opted out of playing what should have been a championship between the fall champs and the spring champs on May 7, one could consider the upcoming Aggie v Cavs game the true national championship.
(UConn stated they couldn't play due to finances, but managed to afford a trip to Scotland this spring.)
Davis dominated this weekend in the quarterfinals and semifinals. On Saturday, the Aggies scores seven tries from seven different players - Becca Lehman, Justine Joya, Sydney Cooper, Carli Watt, Sabrina Perez, Prai Harris, and Erin Martin - to shut out a tough Washington State team 44-0. That set up Sunday's semi against Chico State. Two tries from backs captain Joya paced Davis to a 20-0 hafltime lead. In the second half, flanker Tonya Wessman added a try before Chico finally got on the board. Davis capped it off, though, with two more tries to win 35-5.
In the Eastern bracket, Virginia defeated James Madison on Saturday, and then handled UNC (winners over Central Florida), 38-7 to make the national final May 7.
