In a wild game in Salt Lake City, St. Mary's defeated the University of Utah in the first match of the Gaels two-game tour of the Beehive State.

St. Mary's will take on BYU on Saturday, while Utah has a Pac Rugby Conference game against UCLA. Both teams were expected to test their depth in this game, and maybe that's why defense wasn't exactly on offer. St. Mary's ran out to an early 14-7 lead, but Utah tied it up.

St. Mary's scored two more to lead 26-14 at the break. But these teams were just getting started. The Gaels exploded for three tries in the second half to one from Utah to make it 43-19. But Utah surged, and scored three to one from St. Mary's - now it was 50-33 for the visitors.

Two more Utes tries and they were within a score at 50-43, and soon thereafter they tied it up at 50-50. But St. Mary's scored a late one to finish the game 57-50.
