EWU Undefeated, WWU Gains Pride in Loss
Eastern Washington capped off an undefeated run in the Cascade Collegiate Women’s Rugby Conference with a 36-27 defeat of Western Washington Saturday.
The win put EWU at 5-0, and dropped WWU to 3-2 and out of contention for the championship game, which will be between EWU and Western Oregon. Those two teams battled to a 7-0 EWU win last fall, and so the final should be a good one.
For Western, having moved from being player-coached to having a non-player as coach this past fall, the jump to a 3-2 record was impressive. And it was even more so when you consider that Eastern Washington had given up exactly zero points until WWU scored 27 on them this weekend. Lauren Heller scored two for the Vikings.
“We came out intense,” said WWU Coach Marion Foor. “That was the best game of rugby I’ve seen all year. I am so proud - to put 27 points on a team that hadn’t been scored upon.”
The game was chippy at times and in face a yellow card and two red cards were awarded during the match - one red was give to WWU for a trip, and another red to EWU for tackling a player by her hair braid.
The game was close, 29-27, in fact, until the final moments.
